NFL: Has
established himself as one of the NFL’s
very best defensive ends…Enjoyed a
career year in 2005, posting NFC-leading
14.5 sacks and playing in his 1st Pro
Bowl…Teams with Michael Strahan to give
the Giants the finest pair of defensive
ends in the NFL…Became a disruptive
defensive force after stepping into the
starting lineup following an injury to
Keith Washington in 2004…Played well as
a reserve end and on special teams as a
rookie…Has played in 45 regular season
games with 24 starts.
2005:
Started all 16 regular season games and
the NFC Wild Card Game at right
defensive end…Finished with 70 tackles
(48 solo), 14.5 sacks, 3 passes defensed,
4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble
recoveries…His 14.5 sacks placed him 1st
in the NFC and 2nd in the NFL and was
highest total by a Giants player other
than Michael Strahan since Hall of Famer
Lawrence Taylor had 15 in 1989…Umenyiora
and Strahan combined for 26 sacks, the
most by any pair of NFL teammates…Umenyiora
was selected to his 1st Pro Bowl and was
named 1st-team All-Pro by both the
Associated Press and Pro Football Weekly
and was selected the NFL’s Most Improved
Player by Pro Football Weekly… Umenyiora
and Strahan became the 1st tandem of
defensive ends from the same team to go
to the Pro Bowl together since Jason
Taylor and Trace Armstrong of the Miami
Dolphins in 2000…Had 6 solo tackles, 1
sack and a forced fumble in the NFC Wild
Card Game vs. Carolina (1/8). Sacked
Jake Delhomme for an 8-yard loss and
forced a fumble in the 1st
quarter…Finished with 5 tackles (4
solo), 2 sacks and a forced fumble at
Oakland (12/31).
Dropped
Kerry Collins for a 12-yard loss in the
2nd quarter and recorded his 2nd sack of
the game in the 4th quarter when
he stripped Collins of the ball for a
9-yard loss…Registered 6 tackles (4
solo), 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble at
Philadelphia (12/11)…Split a sack of
Mike McMahon with Fred Robbins in the
2nd quarter. Sacked McMahon and forced a
fumble that was recovered by Kenderick
Allen at the Eagles’ 29-yard line to set
up the Giants’ game-winning field goal
in overtime…Had 8 tackles (7 solo), 2
sacks and a forced fumble at Seattle
(11/27). Sacked Matt Hasselbeck for an
8-yard loss and stripped him of the ball
and dropped him for a 4-yard loss, all
in the 2nd quarter…Finished with 9
tackles (4 solo) and 2 sacks vs.
Minnesota (11/13). Picked up his 7th and
8th sacks of the season when he dropped
Brad Johnson for a pair of 4-yard
losses…Had 3 tackles (2 solo) 1 sack and
a pass defensed at San Francisco (11/6).
Stopped Cody Pickett for a 7-yard sack
in the 4th quarter…Contributed 4 solo
tackles, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and
1 pass defensed vs. Washington (10/30).
Recovered a Chris Cooley fumble in the
3rd quarter and sacked Patrick Ramsey
for losses of 9 and 11 yards in the 4th
quarter to help preserve the Giants’
shutout in a 36-0 victory…Had 2 solo
tackles, including a 5-yard sack of Drew
Bledsoe on which he stripped the ball,
at Dallas (10/16)…Finished with 3 solo
tackles and 2 sacks at New Orleans.
Recorded his 1st sack of the season when
he dropped Aaron Brooks for a 1-yard
loss in the 2nd quarter. Also sacked
Brooks for a 9-yard loss in the 4th
quarter.
2004:
Played in 16 games with 7 starts at
defensive right end…Led the team with 7
sacks, 4 fumble recoveries (including 1
he returned for a touchdown) and 3
forced fumbles…Finished with 58 tackles
(42 solo) and 3 passes defensed…Started
a right defensive end and recorded 9
tackles, 1 sack and a forced fumble vs.
Dallas (1/2). Sacked Vinny Testaverde
and forced a fumble in the 4th quarter
that was recovered by Reggie Torbor and
led to Tiki Barber’s 3-yard touchdown
reception…Finished with a career-high 13
tackles and a sack vs. Pittsburgh
(12/18). Sacked Ben Roethlisberger for a
2-yard loss in the 3rd quarter...Did not
start at Baltimore (12/12), but recorded
4 tackles, a half-sack, 2 passes
defensed and a fumble recovery. Scored
the 1st touchdown of his career when he
recovered a Kyle Boller fumble that was
forced by a Reggie Torbor sack, and
returned it 50 yards in the 2nd
quarter...Finished with 5 tackles and a
half-sack vs. Atlanta (11/21).
Split
a sack of Michael Vick with Lance Legree
in the 3rd quarter for a 4-yard
loss...Entered the starting lineup at
Arizona (11/14) and finished with 4
tackles, 1 sack and a forced
fumble…Replaced injured Keith Washington
vs. Chicago (11/7) and had 3 tackles, a
sack and a fumble recovery. Sacked Craig
Krenzel for a 9-yard loss in the 3rd
quarter...Finished with 3 tackles, a
sack and a forced fumble vs. Detroit
(10/24). Sacked Joey Harrington and
forced a fumble for an 11-yard loss in
the 3rd quarter…Posted his 1st sack of
the season at Dallas (10/10), tackling
Testaverde for a 7-yard loss…Played the
majority of the game vs. Cleveland
(9/26) and had 2 tackles…Recovered a
Clinton Portis fumble that was forced by
William Peterson and had 1 solo tackles
vs. Washington (9/19).
2003:Played
in 13 games, with 1 start...Playing time
increased late in the season because of
injuries suffered by defensive
linemen…Finished with 19 tackles (15
solo), 1 sack and one special teams
tackle...Set up all 3 Giants touchdowns
in season finale against Carolina
(12/28), the first 2 with blocked punts
and the third with a sack and forced
fumble that was recovered for a score by
Keith Washington. Umenyiora’s feat was
the first time the Giants blocked 2
punts in 1 game since Oct. 9, 1943
against the Phil-Pitt Steagles, a team
made up of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia
players during World War II. Named NFC
Special Teams Player of the Week. He
finished with 4 tackles (1 solo) and a
sack for a loss of 17 yards...Had 4
tackles (2 solo) at New Orleans (12/14)
and 2 tackles (1 solo) vs. Washington
(12/7)...Made 1st career start at
Philadelphia (11/16) in place of the
injured Kenny Holmes. Finished with 2
solo tackles...Had 3 solo tackles at
Minnesota (10/26), including a stopping
Randy Moss for a 12-yard loss on a
reverse attempt…Recorded 1st career
tackle when he stopped Patrick Ramsey
after a 2-yard gain at Washington
(9/21)…Played in his first NFL game
against St. Louis (9/7) as part of an
8-man defensive line rotation. Did not
record a tackle.
