On
March 22, 2008 the people of Udi poured
out en mass and crowned Igwe
Chris Ejikeme Ogakwu as the Ekwuluoha
III of Udi. The carnival-like
ceremony was held at the popular Eke Udi
Square in Udi. In attendance included
the Enugu State Commissioner for
Chieftaincy Matters, Barr. Godwin Ogbu,
representatives of the Enugu State
Government, high ranking officials of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a
host of traditional rulers of different
communities in Udi Local Government Area
of Enugu State.
Before his
coronation as the Igwe Ekwuloha III of
Udi, Chief Ogakwu had served Udi Town
for many years as the president of its
apex organization called Udi Progressive
Union. He is well known as a proponent
of Udi cultures and tradition and a
stoic defender of the pride of place of Udi as
the first son of Neke.
Shortly before the coronation, we caught up withi the
then igwe designate who shared some of his vision for the town. "The first order of
business is to reconcile the people of Udi", he said. "There is so much to do.
We need all hands on deck to accomplish the tasks".
Speaking with
Unique Images Magazine after the
coronation, a member of the council of
omenani, Chief Michael Okafor Eze (the
Uzuakpunwa 1 of Udi) described the
coronation of Igwe Ogakwu as the
beginning of a new era in the history of
Udi. “Udi can now start the healing
process and by God’s grace the problems
that have set us behind in the last five
years will now be behind us”.
Unique Images
